WHAT
A day of reflection on Energy Saving and sustainable lifestyles, with particular reference to the important role of bicycles and plants, both important to concretely improve our action.
WHO
Pupils and students of the Istituto Comprensivo Aldeno Mattarello.
AIMS
To promote and disseminate good practices for a more prudent use of energy resources and implement an eco-sustainable lifestyle.
HOW THE PROJECT WAS BORN
The project is inspired by the radio campaign ‘M’illumino di meno’, launched by CATERPILLAR, a RAI Radio2’s programme. It takes its name from the famous verses of ‘Mattina’ by Giuseppe Ungaretti (“M’illumino / d’immenso”).
Caterpillar launched the idea of symbolically switching off the lights on the afternoon of 16 February, the anniversary of the entry into force of the Kyoto Protocol. A decalogue to implement a sustainable lifestyle was also added to this proposal:
1. Switch off lights when not needed and do not leave electronic devices on stand-by.
2. Defrost the refrigerator frequently, keep the coil clean and away from the wall so that air can circulate.
3. Put lids on pots when boiling water and always avoid the flame being wider than the bottom of the pot.
4. Reduce draughts by filling window frames with airtight material. Place curtains in front of windows and outside doors.
5. Save water, first of all by fitting a water breaker to taps.
6. Shop wisely to avoid food waste.
7. Make proper waste sorting.
8. Give objects a second life.
9. Use the car as little as possible and share it with others who make the same journey. When possible, prefer cycling or public transport.
10. Plant trees, plants and flowers wherever possible: even in the city, in gardens and on balconies. Plants purify the air and are home to pollinating birds and insects.
